The Prospect Research Associate will be responsible primarily for identifying and providing gift capacity estimates of potential donors to AJC; and preparing prospect profiles and briefing reports to inform Development solicitations and cultivations. 

Major Functions: 

To identify, collect, organize, manage, and analyze information on potential and current donors of strategic importance to AJC in order to enhance the ability of lay leaders, AJC’s CEO, Development staff, and other solicitors to successfully acquire support for activities and programs. The individual does all this while adhering to AJC’s core values: Respect, Teamwork, Integrity, Excellence, and Accountability.

Specific Responsibilities:

·        Identify the technological tools, systems, and search mechanisms needed for building, implementing, and conducting research on donors and potential donors in a proactive manner. Use Raiser’s Edge in support of prospect management.

·         Develop, implement, and manage systems and procedures to meet the information needs of lay leaders, AJC’s CEO, Development staff, and other solicitors in preparation for contacting, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects (e.g., individuals, foundations); determining leadership development  opportunities; and appropriate donor relations activities.

·        Determine whether major gift prospects are potential AJC donors by researching and analyzing individuals and foundations for: connections to AJC, giving potential, history of philanthropy in areas of concern to AJC, and other relevant criteria.

·        Compile and analyze detailed biographical and other publicly available information on individuals and foundations to determine prospects’ relationships with AJC, interests, and giving capacity.  Prepare detailed and up-to-date briefing reports on prospects and/or groups of prospects as well as their businesses and/or foundations for lay leaders, AJC’s CEO, Development staff, and other solicitors in advance of meetings in order to obtain optimal outcomes.

·        Participate in the development of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.

·        Conduct background checks as part of AJC’s due diligence to screen potential event honorees for award consideration to assure AJC’s reputation and integrity.

Personal Qualifications and Core Competencies:

·         Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree, preferred.

·         A minimum of 2-4 years of experience in building or managing a prospect research function.

·         Familiarity with statistics and statistical analysis.

·         Familiarity with financial terms, concepts, and markets, preferred.

·         Maintain a resource library and employ electronic resources, including the internet and online subscription services, for research purposes. Show initiative in identifying new sources of information, as they become necessary and/or available.

·         Ability to conduct in-depth research (i.e., finances, family information, philanthropy, relationship with AJC) and to analyze and synthesize data from a wide variety of sources, and present the resulting information in a clear report.

·         Demonstrate competence in a variety of computer applications, including database, spreadsheet and word processing programs.  Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge (or similar system) required, especially use of a prospect management function. Knowledge of the Microsoft suite of programs, a plus.

·         Ability to organize and manage a diverse range of assignments and projects with high efficiency, yet thorough attention to detail and follow through.

·         Demonstrate strong communication skills, both oral and written.

·         Resourceful and independent, but comfortable working within the framework of an integrated development program and team-oriented environment. Ability to work with and support fund raising staff to identify and respond to prospect information needs.

·         Ability to adjust to changing priorities and meet deadlines.

·         Familiarity and appreciation of AJC’s mission and goals.

·         Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and with discretion.

·         Be proactive in anticipating and seeking out information related to the immediate priorities of the Development office
